Abstract
Sixteen cases of solid malignant tumors were treated with adriamycin as primary or postope-rative ad juvant therapy. The agent was- administered by means of intravenous or local injection by single or combined method with other chemotherapeutics and simultaneous radiotherapy.
The effectiveness of adriamycin was evaluated according- to the criteria of Karnofsky, revealing 4 cases of category I (40%) among 10 cases who had not been operated radically 5 cases of¢¥breast cancer and 1 case of thyroid cancer revealed no evidence of recurrence of the primary disease for 7 to 18 months with postoperative adjunctive therapy after radical surgery. Two cases of recurrent breast cancer were treated successfully (IA- & IB) by combined method of adriamycin, cytoxan and simultaneous radiotherapy. Thyroid cancer and liposarcoma revealed good response (IA), but rhabdomyosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, and spindle cell sarcoma did worse response than expected (O-OA-II).
Clinical toxicities of adriamycin were alopecia, vomiting, pharyngitis, diarrhea, and melena in the order of frequency. Butt there, was no patient who revealed significant leukopenia or thrombocytopenia. Anemia requiring transfusion developed in 3 cases. Cardiotoxicity was not noticed at all.
